Prime minister signs Board of Peace charter in Davos

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, leading a delegation of diplomatic and economic envoys.

By far the most important moment was when the prime minister signed the inaugural charter of the Board of Peace, a multinational institution dedicated to rebuilding Gaza and settling international conflicts.

Pakistan’s inclusion was perhaps motivated by a few leading factors. For one, the country is currently undergoing a renaissance in relations with the United States—and President Donald Trump holds the sole power to issue invitations to join. Additionally, Pakistan has a long history of peacekeeping operations, experience that will be vital in establishing and maintaining security in Gaza during the reconstruction process. Finally, having mostly Muslim countries on the Board increases the legitimacy of its claim as a multinational project. It lets them inform the Board of cultural nuances for projects in Islamic countries that might otherwise be overlooked.

The prime minister also gave a speech before assembled journalists and government officials detailing recent accomplishments in economic stability, specifically, celebrating massive decreases in inflation and policy rates.
