Calligraphy takes center stage in new exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Islamabad

“The Call of the Divine,” is the name of a new exhibition and artist talk at the National Art Gallery in Islamabad which was organized by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) and the National Heritage and Culture Division.

This exhibition included works from Razwan Baig, Shanzay Baig, and Shazian Baig, of the renowned Baig family. Traditional and modern calligraphy is included in this exhibition, which includes Quranic verses and also showcases Pakistani culture.

“Today’s gathering invites us to reflect on the enduring beauty of calligraphy and its role in uniting tradition with contemporary expression,” PNCA Director M Ayoub Jamali said at the opening of the exhibition.

Jamal Shah was the guest of honor at this event, who made note of the artists’ dedication. He also noted the importance of advancing the understanding and preservation of Pakistani culture through the arts.

Razwan Baig is best known for his contemporary Kufic script works. In developing his talents as a calligrapher, Razwan Baig has studied under some of the best of the best in Pakistan, Turkey, and Iraq. His work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.

Shanzay Baig’s work is inspired by historic Islamic monuments. Apart from her expertise in Islamic art, Shanzay Baig is a marquetry artist, sculptor, marbler, and geometrist. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Shanzay Baig is the archival catalogue specialist for the Barlas Collection.

Shazian Baig has studied and learned from some of the most renowned calligraphers in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Additionally, he is a medical student and an artifacts researcher with the Barlas Collection.
