Pakistan finance minister promotes reform agenda during U.S. visit

Finance Minister and Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb is touring the United States to promote recent Pakistani economic reforms to the international community. He is scheduled to participate in over 50 high-level engagements with prominent members of the overseas Pakistani business community and foreign investors.

On April 12, the finance minister served as the main speaker at Harvard University’s Pakistan Conference panel, Pakistan’s Economic Agenda: Stability, Reform and What Comes Next. He discussed the successful government negotiations during the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that ensured Pakistan’s critical industries remained supplied, noting that Pakistan has avoided more drastic rationing and conservation measures that some countries have been forced to take.

The next day, he met with Jorge Familiar, the vice president and treasurer of the World Bank Group. Together, the two and their staff discussed further collaboration, given Pakistan’s commitment to stable debt management.

Afterwards, he took part in a one-on-one interview hosted by the Atlantic Council, in partnership with IMF-World Bank Week, Pakistan’s path to reform and resilience with Muhammad Aurangzeb. The forum gave Aurangzeb the chance to speak about Pakistan’s declining inflation rates and growing foreign currency reserves, while also explaining the country’s plan to continue economic growth even during the Iran War. He expressed confidence that Pakistan’s economic growth forecast will remain in line with its expectations and external commitments, noting that the flow of overseas remittances, which some feared the war would interrupt, remains stable.

The IMF managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, agrees with Aurangzeb’s assessment, saying that Pakistan’s reform program has “contributed to maintaining macroeconomic stability and building investor confidence.” Securing the confidence of the world’s foremost international finance institutions has long been a goal of the government, and Aurangzeb’s American tour has already proved a positive enhancement for Pakistan’s reputation.
